New Data Service Launched by European Marine Observation and Data Network

The European Marine Observation and Data Network (EMODnet) has launched a new open-access platform that integrates the marine data collected by the network of participating organisations. This is a practical tool that enables the EMODnet’s “collect once and use many times” approach.

A unified, central catalogue can be used on the EMODnet platform to discover, download and visualise marine data categorised into the following seven themes:

  • Bathmetry
  • Human activities
  • Physics
  • Geology
  • Seabed habitats
  • Chemistry
  • Biology

Background on EMODnet

For over a decade, organisations participating in EMODnet have been working together to aggregate observations and data from various sources, process them according to international standards and make that information freely available as interoperable data layers and data products to be re-used by others.

EMODnet is a partnership of more than 120 organisations, including 11 UK-based research organisations.

EMODnet and Copernicus Marine Service (CMEMS) have been collaborating for some time to create synergies between these two key, long-term marine data initiatives of the European Union.
