Key Data on Horizon Europe Implementation in 2021 and 2022

The European Commission has published a factsheet with key data on Horizon Europe implementation, which includes information on the number of applications, success rates, country and sectoral participation and allocation of funding in the programme’s first two years.

The following information and trends have been recorded in Horizon Europe at the end of 2022:

  • 45 000 proposals were submitted to 236 calls
  • €16.3 billion was allocated to successful projects; 5509 grant agreements have been signed
  • The average Horizon Europe grant size is around €3 million, compared to €2.3 million in Horizon 2020
  • The average success rate has increased from 11,9% in Horizon 2020 to 15,9%
  • Applicants represented 180 countries; the successful consortia include 14 182 participants from 142 countries
  • The geographical imbalance within EU countries persists, with almost 50% of applications coming from Germany, France, Spain and Italy. These four countries received more than 50% funding allocated to successful projects
  • 15 ‘Widening countries’ are much less represented, both in applications (19%) and awarded projects (14%)
  • Associated countries represent 6% of applications and non-associated Third Countries 12% – mostly the UK, Switzerland, the US and China
  • UK application numbers have dropped by 50% compared to Horizon 2020
  • HEIs and Research Organisations remain the main participants of the programme (30% and 27% each)
  • SMEs account for 20% of participants, most are located in Germany, Spain and France
  • More than one-third of participants are newcomers receiving 9% of funding.
