ERC-funded Study Identifies Repositories and Data Sharing for Open Science Publishing

The ‘Study on the readiness of research data and literature repositories to facilitate compliance with the Open Science Horizon Europe MGA requirements‘ was published, with data and a final report of relevance to any researchers awarded Horizon Europe funding which comes with Open Science requirements.

This report and associated repository inventory represent the output of a study conducted between March and October 2022 by a group of independent experts and commissioned by the European Research Council Executive Agency (ERCEA).

The group of independent experts has assessed and analysed the readiness of research data and literature repositories to facilitate compliance with the Open Science requirements in the Horizon Europe Model Grant Agreement (HE MGA). This study also takes current repository choice practices of ERC-funded researchers into account.

Useful highlights from the study

  • Inventory of repositories: a spreadsheet listing 137 data repositories and 73 literature repositories, each with metadata on their basic features and suitability for open science requirements
  • General overview of the repository landscape: a useful introduction to the types of repositories available for R&I that explains data repositories of different types and their use across all research domains
  • Analysis of the repositories selected for the study: All 220 repositories included in the study were tested for their readiness to facilitate compliance with the HE MGA mandates, including the degree of coverage for different R&I disciplines, the geographic spread of repositories, the type and openness of content the repositories host, metadata availability for content on each repository and repository readiness to facilitate compliance with the HE MGA metadata requirements, OpenAIRE compliance, overview of what repositories are considered ‘trusted’
  • Case studies of four repositories: these have been highlighted for fulfilling all Horizon Europe mandatory metadata requirement
