The European Research Council (ERC) Synergy Grant 2023 call closed on 25 October and the submission rates are now available on the ERC website.
A total of 395 proposals were submitted to the ERC 2023 Synergy Grant call, which is a slight increase on the 358 proposals submitted to the 2022 call. The 2023 submission rates indicate that an overall success rate of around 13.2% can be expected because the 2023 ERC Work Programme states that 30 Synergy Grants will be funded from the €300 million budget allocation to this call.
The ERC reports that 1,350 principal investigators with 1,236 host institutions applied in total. An average proposed project involves 3 principal investigators and has a budget of about €9.4 million. The highest number of principal investigators applying to this call have applied with host institutions in German (197) and Italian (143) universities and research centres.
Women make up 27% of principal investigators in the proposed projects, similar to the previous call in 2022. Furthermore, 65% of proposals include women, a slight increase from previous years.
Successful projects are expected to be announced in November 2023, as set out in the ERC’s tentative evaluation schedule for this call.
UKRO has further information about the ERC Synergy call on its Portal, including webinars that can help potential applicants to develop their proposals.
