UK Research Office

The UKRO Research Office (UKRO) is the European office of the UK Research Councils.

UKRO’s mission is to promote effective UK engagement in EU research, innovation and higher education activities, by:

  • Enabling the UK research community to make informed decisions about participation in EU programmes and to maximise the opportunities available to them;
  • Supporting UK input into European research policy development and implementation through informing and interfacing with the appropriate bodies;and
  • Developing and maintaining a suite of quality services that meet the evolving needs of sponsors and subscribers.

The Office operates on a membership basis, receiving subscriptions from universities and other research organisations in the UK, as well from some non-UK organisations.

UKRO’s Services
  • UKRO Portal provides comprehensive information and guidance on EU-funded programmes for research, innovation, higher education and related activities. An information services is fully integrated, providing up-to-date information, tailored to the needs of users, on all funding opportunities through the Framework Programme and other European programmes, as well as news on EU research, innovation and higher education policy;
  • Enquiry service, staffed by a team of expert European Advisors, providing guidance, information and advice on EU policies, programmes and funding opportunities;
  • Annual visit from an UKRO European Advisor, providing expert training, information and/or ‘surgery’ sessions tailored to the requirements of the institution;
  • Meeting room in Brussels, within easy walking distance of most European Commission buildings, the European Parliament and the Council of Ministers;
  • Specialist training courses, focus groups and information events, providing in-depth insight into EU programmes;*
  • Annual conference for European officers, with the latest information on programmes and policies presented by European Commission staff, and other speakers;*
  • UK National Contact Points for the Marie Curie Actions and the European Research Council (ERC), each providing a dedicated helpdesk, website and specialised information and training events;* and
  • European RTD Insight, a free of charge monthly publication produced on behalf of the British Council, providing an overview of EU research programmes and policy. Subscribe at: http://www.ukro.ac.uk/rtd.*
